Sixty-seven mass shootings in the U.S. in two months. Strange balloons threatening an alien invasion or a prelude to war. Eggs cost more than bacon! There doesn’t seem to be a lot of good news these days. Fear, depression, and worry seem to be waiting around every corner.
Whether it’s fear of getting the results of that CT scan or fear that layoffs at work may leave you jobless, we all live with some degree of daily anxiety. When you’re a Christian, it’s hard to be an overcomer when everything in life seems out of your control.
So how do we cope with fear? God gives us a lot of encouragement in His word. Hundreds of times, the bible tells us to “Fear Not”. God knew about the poor health report, your cheating husband, your getting fired, your homelessness, your brother’s drug problem—and He still commanded us to “fear not”.
The first place to start is by replacing all those thoughts racing through your mind with His thought. Read some chapters or verses to remind yourself that God is in control, and He knows what you’re going through. Put on some gospel music to encourage yourself, light a candle to calm your atmosphere, and just soak in a soothing bath. Stop letting the pressures and troubles just run rampant in your mind. The problems may still be there for now, but you don’t have to let fear imprison you.
Change your thoughts, and focus on the things of God. Those thoughts have the power to change your situation.
Fight fear with faith.
